Glendale Garden Centre Gardening accessories large selection of outdoor plants plants and seedlings

At last, it is March, the traditional start of the Gardening Year! We have had a mild winter but March came in like a lion and so if the old country saying is true, it will go out like a lamb. Hopefully we can look forward to good weather towards the end of the month.

Now is the time to finish pruning your roses, and if the ground is dry enough to walk on, without the mud sticking to your boots, finish digging around the perennials in the flower borders. The flower borders would benefit from a scattering of general fertilizer raked in around the plants.

Place slug pellets under slates and stones, so that birds cannot get them. Slugs become active this month and in particular they like to eat hostas and delphiniums.

Lawns may need their first cut, but keep the blade set high. Aerate established lawns with a wire rake and apply a dressing of weed, feed and moss kill combined fertilizer.
Spray paths with “Pathclear” to kill weeds and prevent the germination of weed seeds in the path.

Fences which were damaged by the winter winds should be mended this month. Trellis, lap panels, fencing posts and rails are always in stock.

We now have in stock our complete range of ornamental trees. These are potted and can be planted out at any time. Stake trees firmly to prevent roots moving in high winds and keep well watered during their first year. Also in-stock is the full range of potted rose bushes, hybrid teas, floribundas, miniatures, climbers and my favourite….shrub roses. I select roses for their perfume and their disease resistance and where ever possible I look for repeat flowering.

Get ready to grow vegetables when the ground warms. Buy vegetable and annual flower seeds now. If you have limited space for vegetables choose salads and the more unusual vegetables.
